Persistenly Problematic

C

amera problems persist with photo of the day. Apparently, the universe is conspiring against me in my desire to devote myself to a little artistic endeavor every day. My one working camera is now giving me fits and Nikon is still working on an estimate for the other camera. So I give you the three photos I was able to successfully take this week. Maybe I should give up?

Erin Go Braugh!

I know it's totally obvious to do a post on GREEN rooms on St. Patrick's Day, but why would I not? Green is my favorite color after all. So get your Irish on today people! (this does not have to amount of loads of drinking and general drunkery - just you know, wear green and thinking about painting a wall will suffice...though some people MAY want to get drunk, and then paint a wall green...and who am I to judge?)

Okay the wall color here is like the perfect green isn't it? It's my new fave.

Okay look at all the deliciousness going on here. The zebra striped rug? That gorgeous green, super cool fireplace, but check out the pink ceiling. Love it!

This is actually a pretty genius idea. There have been times when I have not had a headboard and this would look awesome.

Oh my gosh...how much do I love this office and especially that CHAIR. I covet that chair.

This borders on being boring. But I did love the shade of green.

Isn't that cool? I can't remember for sure but I think this was from an online European kitchen. I love that tile work. With the farmhouse sink, the faucets actually being in the wall are so cool. I have a farmhouse sink and I love it.

Okay I really liked the green with the black and white checked tile. Super cool. But I also loved the plates on the wall. It's such a good idea sometimes. You have to be careful of what plates or it can turn granny on you real quick.

Don't want to paint the room green? Paint it white and paint the ceiling green!

Everything about this is LOVE.

This is a pretty shade of green. I had a green very similar to this in my family room for a long time - it's a little different shade now - though still close. Okay see how there are all these pastels going on here with the pink, etc. Elle magazine says this is the new trend in home decor. Pastel mixing. So your house can look like an easter house. I'm just saying, if you are a really cool person, you can make it work - and if you are generally not such a cool person, you probably shouldn't do it. It could go really badly on you and suddenly your house will look like a Jewish grandmother living in Florida.

I love this idea where you do stripes, but not really, it's just a gloss surface, and then non-gloss so it's really subtle.

Another amazing green and I love it paired with the hot pinks and oranges on the bed.

HATE that table and chairs. But love the crazy, "I might have taken a lot of acid" in the 60s wall.

Lovely.

I asked Kirk to paint this for me - I don't know if he will get around to it but I HEART it so much!

This green is almost yellow - and with that blue couch? It is to die for!

I just like how that touch of grass green back splash just MAKES this sing.

Just that bit of color - again, really makes this kitchen great. And how much do you love that round black table with the natural wood chairs? Adore.

If there is one thing you should have noticed from all my decorating photos on my blog, I am in love with this little mosaic tiles. Someday I want to re-do my hall bathroom with these. They are so darned expensive though.

Room could be a total snooze-fest but that green island makes it awesome.

Love this retro furniture!

Again, just paint ONE thing green, and you'll like your room better.

This is that almost bluey green - I really think this is a super restful and clean color.

Oh Seriously, you don't know how much I love this ridiculous room. It's just a stupid kind of love.

Even though that tile looks so outdated, this is just such a cute 'country' farmhouse kitchen isn't it? But this is as 'country' a look as I ever like...anything more than this and you risk kitchy.

In a Poetic Mood

The other day I heard someone say that whatever fairy tale you liked most when you were a girl (or I guess a boy as well...though that's not what they said) probably says a lot about the type of adult you turned into.

I had to really think about that. I wasn't sure what my favorite fairy tale was when I was young. Snow White? Not really, the witch scared me to death and the dwarfs made her clean for them all day. I mean when you think about it - all those princess fairy tales have some really awful parts - getting pricked by a spinning wheel and falling asleep for forever, having an evil wicked stepmother and stepsisters? It's all kind of scary. But the one book/story that I would pay rapt attention to over and over again was Alice in Wonderland. I loved my book and I loved to look at the illustrations. But it also seemed like a massive puzzle to me. Why is a Raven like a Writing Desk? I really wanted to know. Eventually I memorized the poem "The Jabberwocky" just because I thought it would be cool. I did that in college. I haven't repeated it in years and now I'm a little rusty on it. But I always remember that the vorpal blade went snicker snack. I don't know why but I always loved it.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Then last week Jordan came home with this huge project she had to do on Coleridge. I thought AHA! a school project I can actually help with because I know something about this. I memorized one of his poems in high school.
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round :
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree ;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh ! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover !
A savage place ! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover !
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced :
Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst
Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,
Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail :
And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever
It flung up momently the sacred river.
Five miles meandering with a mazy motion
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean :
And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far
Ancestral voices prophesying war !

The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves ;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice !
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw :
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
Could I revive within me
Her symphony and song,
To such a deep delight 'twould win me,
That with music loud and long,
I would build that dome in air,
That sunny dome ! those caves of ice !
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware ! Beware !
His flashing eyes, his floating hair !
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

I'm a little rusty on that one too, but I always remember the opening stanza. For some weird reason that poem pops into my mind on odd occasions. When Holden was in high school and he got into slam poetry I became interested in the type of poems he was memorizing. This is the type of poem he was reciting (I've mentioned this one on my blog before, but I just love it):

Mockingbird

Mockingbirds are bad-ass.

Mockingbirds are the MC's of the animal kingdom--
they listen, and mimic, and remix what they like,
they rock the mic.
Outside my window every morning
I can hear them sing
the sounds of the car alarms
like they were songs of spring.
I mean: if you can talk it,
a mockingbird can squawk it.
So check it:

I'm gonna catch mockingbirds.
I'm gonna trap mockingbirds, all across the nation
and put them gently into mason jars
like mockingbird Molotov cocktails.
And as I drive through a neighborhood, say,
where people gotta lotta
I'll take a mockingbird I caught in a neighborhood
where folks ain't got nada
and just let it go, y'know--
Up goes the bird, out come the words:
"Juanito! Juanito! Vente a comer, mi hijo!!"

I'm gonna be the Johnny Appleseed of sounds.
Cruising random interstates and city streets,
rockin' a drop-top Cadillac with a big back seat,
packing like thirteen brown paper Wal-Mart bags
full of loaded mockingbirds.
And I'll get everybody.

I'll get the nitwit on the network news, saying:
"We'll be back in a moment with more on the crisis."
I'll get some asshole at a watering hole
asking what brand the ice is.
I'll get that lady at the laundromat
who always seems to know what being nice is.

I'll get your postman making dinner plans.
I'll get the last time you lied.
I'll get: "Honey, just give me the frikkin' T.V. Guide"
I'll get a lonely little sentence some real bad judgment in it:
"Yeah, I guess you could come inside--
but only for a minute."

I’ll get an ESL class in Chinatown, learning:
"It's raining, it's pouring..."
I'll put a mockingbird on a late-night train
just to get an old man snoring.
I'll get your ex-lover wishing someone else good morning.

Cuz I'll get everyone's good mornings,
I don't care how you make 'em:
Aloha. Konnichiwa. Shalom. A salaam malaikum.

I'll get uptown gurus, downtown teachers,
broke-ass artists, and dealers, and Filipino preachers.
Leaf blowers, bartenders, boob job doctors,
hooligans, garbagemen, your local Congressman
and the spotlight guys in the overhead helicopters.

Everybody gets heard, everybody gets this
one honest mockingbird
as a witness.

And I'm on this. I'm on this 'til the whole thing spreads
with chat rooms and copycats and moms, maybe,
tucking kids into bed, singing: "Hush little baby, don't say a word--
wait for the man with the mockingbirds."

And then come the news crews, and the man-on-the-street interviews
and the letters to the editor--everybody asking:
"Just who is responsible for this citywide,
nationwide, mockingbird cacophony?"

And somebody's finally gonna tip the city council
of Washington D.C. off to me
and they'll offer me a key to the city,
a gold-plated, over-sized key to the city,
and that's all I need, cuz if I get that--I can unlock the air.

I'll listen for what's missing--
and I'll put it there.

I've probably bored some of you to tears - but this is one more from a local Phoenix poet named Klute, that I just really like:

A Prayer for Her

She doesn't believe in God.
There's no Heaven,
No Hell,
And she's on a mission to live forever or die trying -
Me...I'm in love with dying.
While I don't want to expedite my exit
I'm also not afraid of the end,
Because I know that this world doesn't compare
To the one up there.
But all that makes me wonder
What will happen when Death does us part?
I was brought up to believe that only believers
Tip their hat to Saint Peter
And enter the Kingdom of Heaven
She's an atheist
The best she can hope for is an eternity in limbo
Hanging outside the gates of Hell,
And that's only if she's really good.
I can clean off last night's indiscretions
Through the sanctity of confession,
But when her last breath slips from her lip,
On her soul will be the stains of sin that we made together.
Now, I know we're supposed to believe that God is love,
But there is evidence to the contrary
In those bodies that bobbed in the floodwaters
And in the anguished wail of women that still echoes in the Egyptian night.
It's an odd thing to think that the woman you love
Might wind up in Hell on the basis of belief,
And most of the time I have faith in a God who isn't full of furious anger,
But I want to send this warning up to Paradise and down to the Pit:
Treat her soul with tenderness
Give her an honored place in eternity
Send flights of angels upon angels to guide her to her rest;
Because if the Almighty judges her harshly
And I've successfully received the sacrament of the sick and the dead
Know that you will find me hovering over Hades
Waiting to catch her soul to circumvent her passing into perdition
If she leaves this earth without me,
Know that on the day and the our of my death,
I will pinch the Reaper's scythe from his bony hands
And use it to pick the locks on the gates of Hell.
This will not be like when Orpheus descended
There will be no dulcet tones to bring Charon to tears
Or to sing savage Cerberus to sleep
I will lay waste to the Abyss with my love
And obliterate the Fallen with a single stare
I will snatch her from the whirlwind...
Or i will be consumed by it with her.
If there is no room for her in Heaven
I will remain with her in Hell,
For there would be no delight without her,
No ecstasy in her absence.
So God,
If you're listening,
Please understand this is not hubris,
Nor a challenge to your mysterious ways,
But as an entreaty to allow her past the Pearly Gates,
Because if my beliefs are true -
She, and atheist, is your avatar,
And that you'd really only be reclaiming in death
Something that you accidentally placed on Earth in life,
And that in your infinite wisdom
I, your lowly servant, managed to find.

Project 365 - The Munny Shot

Y

esterday's photo a day was okay...I was still trying to mess around with shots of Holden's Buick Electra sitting in front of my house. But it wasn't hard to pick the photo of the day because even though I took quite a few photos, none of them quite worked and this was the best of the lot:

Electra

But to be honest today I am TORN. I took a bunch of photos of Holden's Munny that he made shortly before he left to go to Bulgaria.

I really love this little guy.

He's like a shot up Alien with a little plastic laser gun.

Anyway - I really like a lot of these photos so I am having hard time deciding which one should be Friday's "Photo of the Day". So you know how you could make my Friday happier? Please leave a comment and let me know which one you like the best!

Project 365, Photo a Day

P

roject 365 is hopefully back on track!

I took one camera in and we are waiting on an estimate to fix that one - the other one just seems to need a new external light meter. So as long as I am able to take photos in full daylight - I should be okay for now. Although presently, I do not have all the lens' that I need. BUT - I did not let that deter me the past few days. So here are my latest 3 photos of the day, hopefully I can keep this up now and REALLY do at least a photo a day. I actually kind of liked the way these three turned out.

Oh my Gosh you look like SPRING!

S

peaking of color...

Today I was at the hair salon and someone complimented my bright orange bag (see previous post) - I also had on a sweater jacket which is almost the exact same color. The lady in front of me was wearing this really pretty turquoise, and to the side of me a woman was wearing a bold yellow jacket (which was nearly identical to an Anne Klein jacket I have...in fact, I even wondered if it was the same one) and one of the girls who worked there exclaimed "Oh my gosh! You guys are making me so HAPPY! LOOK! You look like Spring!"

So in honor of spring, and because I love bold and bright, here are some bold and bright rooms to inspire you.

Lots of changes happening around here soon too - and I'll be taking some 'before' and 'after' photos of some new projects I'm going to get started on.

I love bold, but even I probably don't quite have the wherewithall to go this far...although, you know, why not? Life is short. Have fun.

In a million years I bet you would not do this purple striped wall with an almost toile floral red bedspread and a modern yellow lamp - you just wouldn't do it would you? But now I bet you wish you would have thought of it first. Because it's really kind of genius, in a really messed up and slightly dysfunctional way. Which, let's face, it all, genius' are sort of messed up and dysfunctional deep down aren't they?

(big sighhhhhhhh) this is from the now defunct Domino Magazine. I loved getting this in the mail every month. I'm sooooo very sad it's gone. But this room is lovely.

This is just frankly crazy awesome. And could you ever be depressed in a room like this? I think not.

Okay this couch and the photo below are similar to my crazy taste in couches - as in the one I had done in my front room. I know some people HATE this whole patchwork thing. But I just can't help it, as much as I know it's probably not high end sophistication, I just can't help but adore the slightly bohemian nature of it all in an otherwise formal setting.

Something about this is just so darned appealing don't you think? I mean, and I really don't like brown or beige walls or even anything close to brown or beige walls - but paired with this really great robin egg blue - isn't it just delightful?

Again, I am starting to feel like I was so ahead of the trend when I painted my entire perimeter wall in my back yard a bold purple. Seriously, I'm starting to see this. I thought it was MY idea. :)

Did you have a barbie dream house when you were growing up? I had the barbie townhouse. The one with the ELEVATOR. I freaking loved that barbie townhouse, 3 stories with a rooftop to lay out on my barbie lounge chair - and since I had a slew of malibu barbies they were always appropriately tanned. Anyway, Jonathan Adler decorated an entire house as though it were barbie's dream house all fully realized in real life. It's awesome.

I just want to live in this bed - I am want to hide in there forever don't you?

I liked how they paired the red couch and the green couch in the same room - how they weren't afraid to do that and then that light blue wall is really smart looking with all that bold. This is one of the houses I was up against in the color challenge on Apartment Therapy - luckily I went further than this room did - but I really liked it.

This room and the one below are almost so crazy cool you just would never do it. But you maybe SHOULD.

This isn't super crazy - I mean, they've mostly stuck with a color palette that all sort of goes together - but don't you love how that little bit of bold turquoise popping on the pillows and the edging makes everything just so extra great?

Call me crazy but this takes some balls. But it's hyper happy isn't it?

this is one of those bed coverings I would probably walk right past at the store and deem 'ugly' - but look at how great it looks in this otherwise calm and sedate room. It's perfect.

Here I just loved that crazy striped chair. I really NEED a chair like that one.

Soon I'm going to be re-doing myself an office at home and I'd love to come up with something like this - something super comfy but practical.

Look at the curtains - the panels don't even MATCH and this room looks so awesome.

Loved the lines of that sofa with the modern rug with that delicate chandelier.

Again, I know you aren't going to do dare do this. But it's so seriously fab.

Bright green curtains, with a purple couch with a red ottoman with a pink chair? Why not!

That's actually a blue wall behind that cream chair. It's hard to tell, on some monitors it reads black. But it's this really gorgeous blue and then paired with that yummy green pillow. I've just always loved this room - I've looked at it in my file folder a lot.

I swear I have got to figure out a way to do a room with this really bold grass green - I just REALLY love it right now.

Again with the awesome green.

This is just really simple, but what I was thinking was that when I was a student and I couldn't afford any decent artwork and I wasn't allowed to paint my walls - this would have been a good solution - bold fabrics that you like inside embroidery hoops and then hung on the wall in an interesting pattern. I dig this idea a lot.

This is just yummy - and why does it say muddy over there? Is that the mud room they are walking into? No one ever talks about those in Arizona - here everyone talks about "Arizona Rooms" or "Lenai's" and when we first moved here I had no idea what in the heck they were even talking about - also "arcadia doors" What the heck is an arcadia door I would wonder. And I would look around there house looking for a really weird or interesting door that I'd never seen before. Eventually I figured out they just mean "Sliding Glass Doors" which is what we call them in Idaho and Utah. Also in Idaho and Utah we have "mud rooms" which are entry rooms set apart usually off the garage, sometimes part of the laundry room, because with all that snowy weather you're always tracking in mud. But I don't know if that's why it says "muddy" or if these people are just being cheeky. Either way, I really like it.

Yeah by now I'm pretty sure you know why I love this.

Okay look, here again, there isn't that much special going on in this room except they've hung that really bold cloth up there at the top of the room. What a simple, but effective idea.

I'm almost certain I've used this photo before. Because I just heart it so darn much.

Love that blue paired with that lavender and that lime. And then with the chandelier? Be still my heart!

adore, adore, adore that headboard and then I love reds or oranges paired with that blue right now.

Okay so not technically "bold" but I mean - that wallpaper - I could just never commit to it long term - but I would want to date it. :)
